Calling All Blondes: Why purple shampoo?

Do blondes really have more fun? We’d say yes, especially when your hair’s looked after properly. A fresh blonde always turns heads, but what most people don’t see is the upkeep behind that glossy, just-left-the-salon finish.

From overwashing and sun exposure to the wrong shampoo and everyday pollution, it doesn’t take much for blonde hair to lose its shine. And let’s be honest, you can’t always make it back to the salon when your colour starts to fade. The good news is, with the right routine, you can keep your blonde looking bright and healthy at home.

When blonde goes off tone

Whether you’re naturally blonde or you’ve gone lighter in the salon, one thing’s universal: keeping the tone right can be tricky. That bright, clean blonde can quickly turn dull, brassy, or slightly yellow if it’s not looked after.

Why does blonde hair turn brassy?

Things like sun exposure, chlorine, and certain ingredients in haircare (like sulphates) can strip and alter your colour over time. That’s when unwanted warm tones start to creep in, not quite the look you were going for.

Enter: purple shampoo

It might look a bit intimidating in the bottle, but purple shampoo is actually one of the easiest ways to keep blonde hair looking fresh.

It works using colour theory; purple sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel, so it helps neutralise brassy tones and bring your blonde back to a cooler, cleaner shade. Think of it as a quick tone refresh between salon visits.

Is purple shampoo right for me?

milk_shake silver shine shampoo is a great option for both natural and colour-treated blondes. It’s also ideal if you have grey or white hair and want to keep it looking bright rather than dull.

The formula is gentle enough for regular use, while still containing the right level of violet pigment to help counteract unwanted warmth.

If you’re brunette with lighter highlights, you can use it too, it won’t affect your darker base colour but will help keep your highlights looking fresh.

How to use your purple shampoo

Use it just like you would your normal shampoo: massage it thoroughly into your damp hair, then rinse it out after 1-2 minutes to neutralise mild to moderate brassiness. For more severe brassiness, leave silver shine shampoo in your hair for up to four minutes.

Our specially formulated purple shampoo is highly pigmented, so a short scrub goes a long way. More than four minutes of use can lead to the transfer of violet pigment.

How much should you use?

Use it in place of your regular shampoo once or twice a week.

  • For slight brassiness: leave on for 1–2 minutes
  • For stronger tones: leave on for up to 4 minutes

Then rinse thoroughly. It’s quite pigmented, so you don’t need to overdo it, a little goes a long way.

How often should you use it?

Once or twice a week is usually plenty. If you wash your hair more often, just alternate with your usual shampoo to keep things balanced.

Stick with it, and you’ll keep that fresh, salon-finish blonde for longer, without the constant trips back to the chair.
